Liz Williamson Weaving with Waste Masterclass
In association with Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Award 2020
Sunday 7 February 2021, 10.30am-4.00pm
The day will involve a presentation from Liz on her work, a discussions of ideas for weaving and an afternoon weaving in the gallery's Esther Halliday Studio.
Participants are invited to bring a loom set up ready for weaving, ideally a 2, 4 or 8 shaft loom or rigid heddle loom with a cotton warp. Liz will send instructions for warping in mid-January and be available to assist with warping looms at the gallery from 2pm on Saturday 6 February.
Local weaver Sophie Honess will be assisting with the masterclass.
Please bring waste or excess materials for weaving such as paper, fabric, yarns, zippers, nylon monofilament (fishing line), wire, rubber bands, string, braids, ribbons, plastic, elastic, plant material plus cotton yarn for weft, scissors, note book.
Liz Williamson is a weaver based in Sydney. Creating woven structures has been a fascination, passion and creative practice for her since taking a weaving course in the late 1970s. She is highly accomplished as a weaver, maker, artist, researcher and designer who has her own studio practice alongside her position at UNSW Art & Design and her role advising artisan groups in India. Liz has two pieces of weaving in the Seed Stitch exhibition which represent different aspects of her practice.
Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Award 2020
Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Award 2020 is an ADC On Tour, biennial exhibition, produced and presented by Australian Design Centre in partnership with the Seed Stitch Collective.
This year the competition attracted 49 entries from NSW textile artists and the exhibition features outstanding work by the 25 finalists. A broad selection of contemporary textiles engages material use from waste to silk, with themes ranging from artificial intelligence, to the environment and the current pandemic.

The Seed Stitch Collective 2020 is Soraya Abidin and Niki McDonald. The collective originated in 2016 after the first SSCTA was hosted at the Warringah Creative Arts Space and was followed by the Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Awards 2018 at Australian Design Centre.
