Jodie Herden
Artist Talk and Language Workshop for Adults and Children
Sunday 7th March 2021
Children and Adults Programs
Jodie Herden is a proud Gomeroi woman and a descendant of the Fields/Kim/Henry families.
Jodie will take both children and adults through her installation of the ‘Blindspot’ exhibition and speak to the meaning and intention of the works. After each talk – Jodie will conduct a language workshop in the Esther Halliday studio. This is an opportunity for children and adults to learn local Gamilaroi/Kamilaroi language.
Jodie’s body of work, Mother Tongue, highlights the significant impact that loss of language has had on First Nations peoples. Traditional languages are a key element of their identity, cultural expression, autonomy, and spiritual and intellectual sovereignty. Its central place in all aspects of Indigenous culture means its loss is a source of grief for many. However, the future is bright - with opportunities to connect and understand our local Gamilaroi / Kamilaroi culture.
