TAMWORTH REGIONAL GALLERY FRIENDS NEWSLETTER
HIDDEN TREASURE : weaving by Jutta Feddersen

The discovery of a large fibre work was one of the many surprises that was part of the fibre textile collection valuation recently completed by Meredith Hinchliffe. Over the past 12 months all of the Gallery’s collections have been valued and this process has enabled the catalogue and documentation of all items to be corrected
and updated.
The work (detail below) was believed to be by Jutta Feddersen and this was confirmed when Jutta was invited to visit Tamworth recently to authenicate it.
Conversations with Jutta provided details on the creation of the work. It was done as a private commission to be located above a fireplace in a domestic setting. Jutta was surprised at the excellent
physical condition of the weaving and she was excited to be reacquainted with an aspect of her early work. She is currently woking on completing her autobiography, to be published by Murdoch Press in the near future.

From the President & Committee
NEWS from 2009

As another year is drawing to a close, we thought it would be a good time to present a brief report of some of the activities carried out by the Friends of the Gallery during the past year.

It had been an exciting year for the Friends of the Gallery with a varied calendar of interesting exhibition openings to attend. We provided supper and drinks for most openings and the donations received from these together with your membership have enabled us to purchase works worth $4600 from Momentum to be included in the Fibre Collection.

We spent $3500 recently replacing a work from the 1994 Fibre Collection which was lost when being returned from exhibition travelling.

We also contributed $1000 towards the process of obtaining DGR status. This enables artists and other benefactors from our community to donate works to the gallery and receive a tax benefit in return.

The Fibre collection has been written up in magazines from USA and England this year.

In August we farewelled our Community Services Director, Patrick O’Connor who left to follow commercial interests in Newcastle and welcomed Bruce Mercer who has taken his place. We are very grateful that Patrick was able to obtain a traineeship for an additional staff member, Kate Shaw, before he left. Kate started work in September and both Pam and Sandra are delighted with the amount of work they are now able to achieve with another pair of hands as they were seriously stretched with only 2 full time staff to man the gallery.

We hope you will be happy to renew your membership for 2010 as we believe that it offers advantages to you and to the gallery. Your membership fees go towards regular information on coming exhibitions and openings, artists’ talks, workshops and happenings at our gallery as well as offering discounts at the gallery shop, Narnia Bookshop, Inspirations Gift & Patchwork Gallery and Frames & Prints.

For those of you who would like to be more involved there are opportunities to help by participating in meetings (short), assisting in catering for openings or volunteering to work on front desk. (Contact Pam Brown 6767 5519).

Also a reminder that the AGM of the Friends will be held on 8th February, 2010 at 5.30pm in the conference room near the gallery. Hope we see you there.

A special Friends minatures exhibition for Dec 2010 will provide the opportunity for our local and regional audience to appreciate and purchase works by our very talented regional artsists.

End-of-year message
from the director

It is hard to believe that we have just hung our last show for the year. I am reminded of the old saying ‘time flies when you are having fun’ It has been another action packed year full of exhibitions, openings, artist talks and events and I am pleased to report that our visitor numbers have shown a healthy increase with lots of positive feedback.
We have a new sculpture by Roger Noakes titled The Illustrated History of Handles.
This is a new acquisition for the Gallery and looks right
at home in the foyer.

We also have just rehung
the John Coburn tapestry Fanfare in the reception
area which certainly adds a bit of colour to the place. So if you haven’t had a chance to see this wonderful work then now’s the time. It will be up until the end of January 2010.
Of course with Christmas just around the corner you may be looking for that special or unusual gift, so don’t forget to have a look at what we have in the Gallery shop. Lots of new and interesting books, pottery, wood, glass, bags, scarfs, wraps, jewellery, book marks and puzzles.
Remember
Friends of the Gallery get 10% off all stock that isn’t on consignment.

Pam, Kate and I are off to Sydney at the end of November for two days to select the work for the ARTEXPRESS exhibition scheduled for May 2010.

The Gallery has been invited to make our own selection for exhibition here in Tamworth
from all the works that have been put aside; ie works by visual arts students who have scored in the top 10% of the state in the 2009 HSC. The works are sent to a warehouse at Hombush Bay
where curators from the Art Gallery of NSW and other invited Gallery representatives can go to
view and select works.

Beside ARTEPRESS next year we will be hosting some wonderful exhibitions:

• Contemporary Chinese Art in January

• Retrospective of the iconic Australian photographer Max Dupain in June

• The ARCHIBALD Prize in September.

We will also be showcasing our local and regional
talent with seven shows programmed for 2010
starting with Bronwyn Woodley-Graham in
February.

So next year is shaping up to be another busy and exciting time. I look forward to seeing
you at the Gallery and wish you all a very happy holiday season.
